Hello Ladies,

Today I am here to review a kajal (kohl) for you all.

I have a kajal pencil that I am not liking very much. The regular sharpening and the irritation it is causing my eyes are the reasons why I have been looking for a different one. So this time, I thought of picking a kajal that does not need sharpening and also doesn't make my eyes sting and/or water (as I wear contact lenses frequently). After going through a few kajals online, I finally zeroed in on buying Maybelline New York The Colossal Kajal 24 Hr Smudge Proof Deep Black. There are several reasons why I chose this. One - that Maybelline New York is one of the trusted cosmetic brands in the world, second - that the kajal is contact lens friendly, third - that it is enriched with aloe vera and fourth - that it claims to stay for 24 hrs without smudging.

I have been using Maybelline New York The Colossal Kajal 24 Hr for about 2 weeks now and honestly it is far far better than the kajal pencil I used before. Though some of the tall claims made by Maybelline, i.e. of lasting 24 hr without smudging does not literally hold true, it is still way better to get a dark black kajal, which is long-lasting and that doesn't irk or cause watery eyes. Before I tell you more, let us go through the standard drill of informing you more about the product, my experience and what I liked and didn't like about it.

About Maybelline New York The Colossal Kajal 24 Hr

Maybelline New York The Colossal Kajal 24 Hr with Aloe Vera is similar in packaging as their previous 12 Hr one. Still, the elongated oval, bright yellow colored sturdy paper/plastic packaging with printed matter in bold black, makes it look quite catchy. The printed words are also very easy to understand. The words 'Maybelline New York The Colossal Kajal' is the first thing that catches your eye. Apart from the price, the words 'Lasts 24 Hr', 'Smudge Proof, Deep Black', 'Black Fix Formula' 'With Aloe Vera' and 'Ophthalmologically Tested' are some other important information printed on the front.

On the back side, there is a whole lot of information summarized under different headings. It is not possible for me to write down everything, hence I have attached a picture above for you all. Under the heading Colossal Intensity, the features of the kajal are given in a gist. Under Colossal Care, the brand gives you information about some key elements present in the kajal that care for your eyes. The Colossal Tips section tells you how to use the kajal to get a sharp and defined look while the Colossal Effects sections tells you ways in which you can create different looks using this dependable kajal.

My Review

Get rid of the packaging and you get a sturdy and slim looking yellow coloured pencil kajal with a fitted cap. Look-wise, it is pretty and bright and is also travel-friendly (can be easily slipped in your wallet, handbag, purse, cosmetic bag, travel bag, etc.).

The actual kajal can be used by the twist up mechanism which is quite simple. On twisting up, you get a jet 'black' shade kajal pencil, which is retractable. The kajal is also quite simple to use, as it effortlessly glides on your waterline, as well as your upper and lower lash lines. However, what I have observed is that you need to swipe the kajal at least twice, to get a clean line on your waterline. To get a bold and glamorous look, a couple of more swipes of this kajal and you are ready to go. Some of the other pluses of this kajal are that it is decently pigmented, doesn't bother your eyes or make it dry (because of the aloe vera present in it) and gives out a neat matte finish post application. In fact, you can try any type of looks with ease using this kajal.

Now let me tell you about a small experiment I did. Since I heard a lot about the smudge proof, water proof and 24 hr claims, I thought of testing this out. So one afternoon, I applied the kajal on my waterline and upper lash line, with the sole intention to keep it on for full 24 hours. After 5 hours, I observed my eyes. The kajal stayed intact without smudging, which I think is pretty good. Post 7 hrs, I felt that the kajal started fading very slightly in the waterline. Not much to feel bothered about though. Post 10 hrs, the kajal in the waterline decreased some more and very slight smudging was observed near the lower lash area. The kajal in the upper lash line remained intact though. I washed my face with my regular cleanser before going to sleep. The kajal doesn't smudge because of water. However if you use coconut oil/olive oil or your makeup remover to cleanse it, then it goes off. I slept with the kajal on, to complete my 24 hr experience. Morning, the smudginess had increased (but it didn't look messy or like I had dark under eye circles), the kajal in the waterline had decreased but the kajal in the upper lash line was still intact. In short, the kajal does stay long, but not 24 hours without smudging or fading. The water proof claim is true though.

Overall, Maybelline New York The Colossal 24 Hr Kajal keeps up to some of its claims. You do not feel your eyes getting dry or irritated after use, which shows that it is sensitive to your eyes. You can carry this dark black kajal easily and anywhere you want. At Rs. 180/- (you can get it for discounted rates at Amazon, Nykaa and other selected online stores), the kajal is budget-friendly. Long-lasting and waterproof are some other pluses. The kajal claiming to stay full 24 hr without even smudging is exaggerated though. In addition to this, there is no mention of the ingredient list. So, you do not what all goes into the kajal, which is another flip point.

My Ratings

I would go with 4.5/5 for this kajal. Far better than my previous kajal and a with a handful of pros, I really liked Maybelline New York The Colossal Kajal 24 Hr with Aloe Vera. Am I going to buy it again?? Sure, why not.
